Newcastle Boss McClaren Targeting Another Two Players

Are NUFC going to strengthen further before the window shuts?

Steve McClaren has admitted he would "love another couple of players" before the transfer window shuts - and that he now has a "clearer idea" of where he still needs to strengthen his Newcastle United squad going forward. The Magpies have already made four signings this summer but their head coach has revealed that he would love more to follow. Interestingly, McClaren says Newcastle will have to "wait and see" what happens in the final two weeks of the window, but that the Magpies could well be active if they can find the "right kind of players".

Newcastle have already signed Georginio Wijnaldum, Chancel Mbemba, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Toney so far this summer. But, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle's trip to Swansea City on Saturday (3pm kick-off), McClaren said (NUFCTV, paywall):
"I think every manager would sit behind this desk, and they are throughout the country, and say we'd love another couple of players. "If that's possible and they're the right kind of players then I'm sure yeah we'll be patient for that but at the present moment we're happy with what we've got and we go forward with that."
McClaren also admitted that some of his squad were "not happy" after being left out of the Barclays Premier League season-opening 2-2 draw against Southampton last week. He continued:
"Yeah I think so (that it's more clear whether I need to add to my squad). A lot clearer. "(There's) still a long way to go in terms of squad, in terms of settling everybody down. "There's a few who've been left out who obviously are not happy and that's normal. And there's a few who have a bit to prove. "I think pre-season, the first game, another week's training - I think we're getting towards what we want to move on with and still with another two weeks to go things will happen in the window and we wait and see."
