Newcastle Fans’ 11 Most Hated Players Of The Modern Era
8. Jose Enrique
Some Newcastle players get away with leaving the club in times of turmoil thanks to their service record for the club and are still loved as heroes - like Shay Given mostly was - but others conduct themselves in such a poor way at the end of their time at the club that they instantly earn themselves the hatred of the fans. Though he started slowly, Jose Enrique used the season in the Championship for Newcastle to prove himself a rising talent of some potential: he was quick, strong and could pass, and he seemed genuinely committed to the club. But then not so long later, the left-back became disillusioned with life under Mike Ashley (understandable) and publicly decided to criticise the club, which would have been fine if it wasn't painfully obvious he was doing so to earn a move to Liverpool. The Merseysiders sniffed around for a while and Enrique cemented his position as the club's new favourite fool when he went in search of top 6 football and failed as Newcastle came fifth. And the sight of him being forced in goal at St. James' in a rare win over his new club didn't hurt either.
