Newcastle Fans’ 11 Most Hated Players Of The Modern Era
9. Jean Alain-Boumsong
Unlike fellow disappointing centre-half Marcelino, Frenchman Boumsong's only major crime for Newcastle was being incredibly poor for most of his time in black and white. He wasn't wilfully lazy, nor did he bad-mouth the club, he just wasn't anywhere near the level of ability he should have been to justify the ridiculous £8m fee the club paid Rangers (nothing suspicious there). The early signs weren't exactly good, as Boumsong's debut against mighty Yeading in the FA Cup was crowned when the ball hit him square in the middle of his back as he waited for it to drop over his head. That was fine though, he was rusty from playing Scottish football - and then he did form a reasonable partnership with Titus Bramble for a while until they both remembered who they were. Fans who had shouted "BOUM!" whenever he made a clearance quickly turned as he looked like a fish out of water, and he attracted the anger of those who hated everything about the needless excesses and stupid decisions of Graeme Souness' tenure as Newcastle manager.
