Newcastle Legend Warns Missing Out On Top Target Would Be "Big Blow"

Newcastle United legend Rob Lee has warned the Magpies that it would be a "big blow" if they missed out on Charlie Austin this summer - a player he believes would be a "great signing for the club". The Magpies are among a host of Premier League sides chasing the 26-year-old's signature this summer but it is believed that they are unwilling to meet Queens Park Rangers' £15 million asking price. Yet Lee thinks the Magpies "must get" the 18-goal hitman if they are to really move forward during this window.

Speaking to Kicca, Lee - who netted 56 times in 379 appearances for the Magpies between 1992 and 2002 - said:

"I've been saying all along that Charlie Austin would be a great signing for the club, but if they do bid for him they must get him. "If he goes elsewhere then that will be a big blow for the club."

Leicester City are known to have had a £12 million offer turned down earlier in the summer - with the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth and the Magpies also interested in the forward. The 26-year-old netted 18 Premier League goals last season and is one of the most sought-after strikers in England, plus he is entering the final year of his QPR contract. Interestingly, when asked about whether or not Austin and his other QPR players would still be at Loftus Road come the end of the transfer window on Monday, Rangers boss Chris Ramsey said (The Independent):

"We know it's a financial situation where the players, given the right offer, will probably go. "Selfishly, I hope nobody comes in for them. Whoever's in the building and can help needs to be on hand. "What is happening is that the players are training very hard to get fit for the beginning of the season and if they€™re fit they'll feature."

Although Lee believes the Magpies still need to sign Austin this summer, he has been impressed with Newcastle's early business - but he wants further spending despite the acquisitions of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Georginio Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba. He continued (Kicca):

"Newcastle have made a few impressive signings in the last few weeks but it has now all gone a bit quiet. "I hope the club bosses haven't decided to close their chequebook because they still need to sign several more players to be able to compete once more in the Premier League."
