Newcastle Transfer News: £10m Price-Tag Slapped On NUFC Defensive Target

Newcastle United, Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United have been told they must pay in excess of £10 million if they hope to prise Tyrone Mings away from Ipswich Town this summer. The 22-year-old defender was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the January transfer window but the Gunners balked at the inflated valuation placed on Mings by Ipswich. However, The Chronicle claim that the Tractor Boys remain unmoved on the price-tag and will still demand at least £10 million for the 6ft 5in full-back, who can also operate at centre-half.

Such versatility has attracted interested from a whole host of Premier League clubs - and the ability to cover more than one position is certainly something the Magpies are looking for in potential defensive recruits this summer. Mings was also an integral member of the Ipswich side who exceeded expectations by reaching the Championship play-off semi-finals last season. New Magpies head coach Steve McClaren has been promised a supposed "transfer war chest" to spend on improving his squad, and Mings would prove to be a major coup. The former Yate Town and Chippenham Town defender moved to Ipswich for just £10,000 in 2013 and he has made 56 appearances for the Suffolk club to date, scoring once. Last summer Ipswich reportedly rejected a £3 million bid from Crystal Palace for Mings - and they are now looking for more than treble that fee if the defender, who has two years left to run on his contract, is to be allowed to leave Portman Road. Newcastle will need to loosen the pursestrings if they hope to get this one done. But whether they will or not is still to be seen.
