Newcastle Transfer News: Panathinaikos Eye Mehdi Abeid

The Magpies risk losing their talented young midfielder as the mass exodus begins.

Newcastle United risk losing Mehdi Abeid to Greek side Panathinaikos this summer as the midfielder continues to become disillusioned with life on the bench. John Carver has seemed reluctant to give the 22-year-old Algerian game time in recent weeks, with Abeid playing a total of just one minute in the last three matches combined. And that is despite the fact Newcastle are on a 10-game winless run - nine of which they have lost - and that Ryan Taylor has occupied a place in the heart of the Magpies' midfield, even though the former Wigan Athletic player has looked completely off the pace.
Abeid's situation has not gone unnoticed in Athens according to The Chronicle, however, and the side with who he won the Greek Cup last season are looking to lure him back to southern Europe for £300,000. The midfielder impressed during his time at Panathinaikos, scoring 10 goals in 38 appearances, and the Greek club want to add greater strength to their squad for next season.
With Carver clearly not trusting Abeid enough to play him from the start during Newcastle's relegation battle, Panathinaikos believe a modest fee of just £300,000 will lure a midfielder who has featured just 16 times all campaign, although that is partially due to injury problems. Could Abeid be the first to leave St James' Park in a mass exodus this summer, particularly if they are relegated? For all the latest NUFC News, Views and Transfers make sure to follow WhatCultureNUFC on Twitter and Facebook.
