Newcastle Transfers: 10 Players From The World Cup To Sign

2. Steven Defour - Belgium

Yet another previous target, Steven Defour is a very talented creative midfielder that could fill the Cabaye shaped hole in the Newcastle midfield, should Grenier or Cabella not work out of course! A very highly rated player at Standard Liege in his early days Defour, now 26, signed for FC Porto in 2011. The Portuguese side had just won the treble under Andre Villas-Boas and were a very attractive proposition, but it was still quite a surprise that he went there considering the list of teams in higher profile leagues chasing him at the time. Defour has also been a regular in the Belgian national side, earning 43 caps since making his debut in 2006, but only making the benxh for their Group H opener against Algeria. However, his time in Portugal hasn't been as successful as he'd have hoped and expected when he signed at the Estadio do Dragao, recently falling out of favour in a midfield with competition from the likes of Mexico's Hector Herrera, Manchester City bound Brazilian Fernando and Colombian youngster Juan Quintero. One of the best in Newcastle's grasp in terms of technical ability and passing range, Defour would definitely give the team back the impetus they lost when Cabaye swapped the Bigg Market for the Champs-Elysees in January. He may well be looking to move on this summer, but European football will be high on his wanted list. Even so, Steven Defour is definitely worth considering.
