Newcastle Transfers: 10 Worst Ever Premier League Signings

5. Albert Luque

From: Deportivo Fee: £9.5 million (Source: The Guardian) Freddy Shepherd was chairman, Graeme Souness was manager: never have two men been so feckless in their judgement of a player - well, since these two morons signed number 2 in our list. Luque was said to be 'extremely talented'. He wasn't. It was said ' he will score and create goals'. He didn't. His solitary goal in the 4-1 amuse-fest at Sunderland provided us with the quote, 'Even Luque scored'. That's confidence building right there for an attack-minded player. He was unfortunate to rupture his hamstring early on in his Newcastle career, but he was also fortunate to be given a very heft wage packet - taking the rough with the very smooth was old Albert. Quite how he ever cost Newcastle so much is beyond baffling. Though the transfer begins to make a lot more sense when you consider it was one of those questioned in the Stevens report that investigated corruption in football, just like three others from Souness' reign of hopelessness. But whilst the inquiry left this transfer unanswered as a result of contradicting evidence, the prosecutors did find that Luque was in fact, rubbish.
