Newcastle Transfers: 5 Best & 5 Worst Ever January Transfer Deals

1. Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll

Although I was devastated at the time, this has to be the best (or worst from a Liverpool perspective) piece of business ever conducted. Although Carroll has undoubted talent, and his aerial prowess is second-to-none, his £35 million transfer to Anfield in 2011 was perhaps the epitome of panic-buying. The window proved to be a lucrative one in terms of transfer fees, as Fernando Torres moved to Stamford Bridge for £50 million, and saw his career go the same way as Carroll€™s. The lanky, Gateshead-born target-man had started the 2010-11 season impressively, scoring 11 goals in 19 league appearances, including a hat-trick in the 6-0 drubbing of Aston Villa in August. Despite this, the fact that Liverpool made Carroll the most expensive English footballer of all time is rather laughable, even more so due to his inexperience at the top level. The England international has struggled throughout his Anfield career, scoring only 11 goals in 58 appearances, and subsequently being loaned out to West Ham. His departure from Anfield in the summer is imminent, with Liverpool and West Ham already agreeing a permanent deal, and Newcastle reportedly being interested in re-signing their former academy product, no doubt for a fee substantially less than they received 2 years ago. So there are Newcastle€™s 5 worst, and 5 best January deals, did I miss any? Or do you disagree with anything that I€™ve said? Please leave a comment.
