Newcastle Transfers: 9 Forwards Pardew Must Consider In January

6. Georgios Samaras (Celtic)

Samaras would hardly be the kind of signing that would get Newcastle fans' hearts fluttering in excitement, but the key issue is that he is both experienced in the Premier League and would come cheap. Thanks to his deal with the Scottish champions coming to an end in the summer, Newcastle could be one of the English clubs looking to take advantage of his cheaper availability. And though it might not appease too many fans, Samaras would definitely be in the same vein as the signing of Antoine Sibierski, which was a surprising success under Glenn Roeder. The 6'4 inch Greek striker would only be a stop gap, but he has the kind of profile and presence that could take advantage of the kind of approach play that has become a part of Newcastle's play recently (especially in terms of the balls into the box that often go entirely wasted.) Samaras could also play in a front three, as well as playing more of the target man role that Ameobi is used for currently, and with 45 goals in148 games for Celtic, he wouldn't be an untested quantity, even if this will no doubt be suggested as a controversial choice.
