Newcastle United 0-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach - Player Ratings

2. Daryl Janmaat - 5.5 (Replaced By Chancel Mbemba After 62 Minutes)

This was certainly not Janmaat's finest performance in a Newcastle shirt, with the Dutchman struggling defensively early in the second-half and guilty of some criminal defending. His poor positioning directly contributed to at least three Borussia chances. Going forward Janmaat was full of endeavour as ever, thriving with the new-found freedom Steve McClaren has granted him to attack, but his efforts came to nothing much. He will almost certainly be ready come next weekend when it matters, though.

Chancel Mbemba - 6

Mbemba probably did not expect to make his Newcastle debut as a right-back, but that's where he was asked to play after replacing Janmaat in the 62nd minute. The 20-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo international shored up the Magpies' defence slightly, although he didn't add too much to a game that lacked any sort of urgency or quality - aside from Thorgan Hazard's effort. Surely a better option than Mike Williamson for Southampton if his move gets ratified before the weekend.
