Newcastle United Deny Channel 4's Sports Direct Documentary Claims

NUFC refute Dispatches' claims of retail relationship between club and owner Mike Ashley's firm.

Newcastle United have refuted what they label "wholly inaccurate" claims about the club's retail relationship with Sports Direct made by Channel 4 in a special Dispatches programme. "Secrets of Sports Direct" suggested that the Magpies get absolutely no money from club owner Mike Ashley for displaying advertising of his business around St James' Park. The programme also claimed that the retail arm of Newcastle United is worth £3.4 million to Sports Direct - but the club released a statement just minutes after the hour-long expose aired on Monday night denying these claims and stating they will clarify their position on Tuesday.
The club released the following statement on their official website, nufc.co.uk:
"The Club has noted the Channel 4 'Dispatches' programme aired tonight (Monday, 27th April) and in particular the reference to the terms of the retail relationship between the Club and Sports Direct. "The Club is extremely disappointed no-one from Channel 4 contacted the Club for comment. "The information broadcast is wholly inaccurate and the Club will provide further information and clarification tomorrow (Tuesday, 28th April)."
Magpies supporters protested against Ashley's ownership during the 3-2 home defeat to Swansea City on Monday - as well as joining Rangers fans in standing outside Sports Direct shops and "boycotting" buying products from the retail shop.
