Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill is eyeing up a swoop for Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie, who is out of contract in June. The former Liverpool player, who has appeared 81 times for the Magpies since his joining the club in 2008, is said to be settled in the North-East and keen to remain in the area. He has scored 7 times for United, though has recently found himself switched to a more defensive role while filling in for Cheik Tiote in the Newcastle midfield. Sources within the Stadium of Light have told WhatCulture O'Neill is keen to bring the ball-playing midfielder to the club, with on-going uncertainty regards Craig Gardner who considers his future to be at a midlands based club. While Guthrie would welcome a move within the region, it is likely he would be concious of the ramifications that a move to Newcastle's bitter rivals, Sunderland, would have. Sunderland are also continuing their pursuit for the signature of Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar who, like Guthrie, is out of contract this summer.
