Newcastle's 10 Greatest Premier League Moments

5. Alan Shearer Breaks Jackie Milburn's Goal Scoring Record At The Gallowgate End

Even though hardly any Newcastle fan in 2015 has seen 'Wor' Jackie Milburn play, he holds a special place in all of their hearts. It's all about the stories. Stories that most United fans today will be able to tell their children and grandchildren about Alan Shearer, just like their grandparents did about Milburn. February 4, 2006 saw your run-of-the-mill Barclays Premier League fixture take place at St James' Park as United beat Portsmouth 2-0. Nothing special there. But for Big Al it was anything but an ordinary match, as after a divine back heel flick from Shola Ameobi, the former England skipper held off former Toon centre back Andy O'Brien and toe-poked a shot through Dean Kiely's legs to break Jackie's 49-year-old record of 200 goals for Newcastle United. AND it was at the Gallowgate End too... You couldn't have written it any better. Alan, of course, would go on to retire from the game with a total of 206 goals in the black and white shirt, with the final strike coming via a penalty at the Stadium of Light during a 1-4 win for Untied.
