Bobby Robson worked wonders to get Newcastle back into the Champions League places and his Magpies side led the Premier League at Christmas. However, despite finishing in fourth place, they ended the season disappointingly with a 3-1 loss at The Dell. Anders Svensson opened the scoring for Southampton before James Beattie's penalty doubled their advantage. Alan Shearer pulled one back at his former stomping ground and, despite Taher El-Khalej being sent off for the home side, Paul Telfer sealed Saints' victory in injury-time.
