Newcastle's Final-Day Premier League Results - How Have They Fared?

6. Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle United (24/05/09) - LOST

The harshest of all harsh days from Newcastle United's history - and a scene they do not want to replicate on Sunday. Newcastle headed to Villa Park in 18th place and needed to secure a result in order to avoid relegation. In the end a point would have been enough because Hull City lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United, but the Magpies could not do it. Kevin Keegan had left his role early in the campaign, before Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton had both taken caretaker charge at different times. However, it was left to club legend Alan Shearer to try to save Newcastle over the final eight matches, but he couldn't do so, and Damien Duff's own goal against Aston Villa sent Newcastle down, ending a 16-year stay in the Premier League.
