İsmail Kartal led the Champions League regulars to second in the Turkish league last season before departing at the end of May. These rumours have surfaced in the face of numerous sources claiming Vieira was set to hold talks with United in the next 48 hours. Some had even gone as far to say the French World Cup winner stayed in a well known Newcastle hotel on Sunday night before holding talks yesterday. The interview process will begin this week with the 38-year-old 'Invincibles' team member, manager of City's Under-21 squad at the moment, keen to test himself in the Premier League, seeing Newcastle as the ideal opportunity if he was to be given the tools to succeed. Vieira's odds for The Toon's top job were slashed pretty severely on Friday before it emerged that he had overtaken former Derby County manager Steve McClaren as the favourite to land the post. If these new rumours are true, then Newcastle will have to turn to one of the other men on their shortlist. Premier League great Vieira is rumoured to have been targeted along with McClaren, former Lyon manager Remi Garde while names like Middlesbrough's Aitor Karanka have also emerged as possible contenders.
