At 28 years old, Smalling is one of the most experienced centre backs that Gareth Southgate will be considering for Russia. The Manchester United defender was selected for both the 2014 World Cup (starting one group game once England's elimination was confirmed) and Euro 2016, starting all four games England played, ahead of Manchester rival John Stones.

Throughout his meteoric rise from Maidstone to Manchester United by way of Fulham, Chris Smalling has improved and improved, winning both team trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League, and individual trophies including Manchester United Players' Player of the Season.

This experience and leadership will be priceless in Russia, and not only is Smalling a prime candidate to start alongside John Stones at centre back, he could also be handed the captain's armband.
