With Ashley Young taking the starting left back spot, the race for his back up is firmly between Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand. While both men were selected by Roy Hodgson for Euro 2016, the former was the preferred choice at left back, starting three out of four games, and two years later, Rose will be preferred again.

It has been an odd season for Danny Rose to say the least. The Tottenham man came under fire early in the season for voicing some frank, unpopular opinions about Spurs and his future, and following a couple of injury setbacks, Rose has been limited to just six Premier League appearances all season, having been overthrown by Ben Davies.

In spite of this, Southgate seems to have preferred Rose to Bertrand in England’s most recent friendlies, making the squad for all four, and earning a starting spot against the Netherlands and Germany. While he is not likely to start ahead of Young in Russia, Rose will make a fantastic option to come off the bench if and when Young needs a break.
