Premier League 2019/20: 8 Big Takeaways From Gameweek Two

4. History At Arsenal

The year was 2009. Andrey Arshavin and Sol Campbell still wore the Red of Arsenal, and Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor had just left for Manchester City. The Gunners traveled to Everton for their first Premier League game of the season, followed by a home game against Portsmouth a week later.

Arsene Wenger’s men picked up two huge wins, beating Everton 6-1 and Portsmouth 4-1. Amazingly, this was the last time Arsenal won their first two games to open the Premier League season. Until Saturday, that is. After sneaking past Newcastle in the 2019-20 season opener, the Gunners beat Burnley 2-1, heading to the top of the table.

Among others, draws against Newcastle, Sunderland, and Stoke, and defeats against Liverpool, Aston Villa, and West Ham United, have stopped Arsenal from hitting six points after two games over the last ten years. Unai Emery had different ideas this season, however.

Though they were made to work for the win right to last minute, goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelled out Ashley Barnes’ third goal of the season at the Emirates, to give the Gunners six points out of six for the first time in ten years.
