Premier League: 5 Best Substitute Keepers This Season

3. Thomas Sorensen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX8jGu0ExS4 The six foot five Dane retired from international duty in May 2012 after 101 caps for Denmark rather focusing on ending his career at club level. This season though, Sorensen has only made appearances in cup matches for Stoke City, number two behind the Bosnian keeper Asmir Begovic, who is eleven years his junior. Okay, so this could be a focus on developing the team for the future but this does not mean that Thomas Sorensen is not one of the best keepers in the Premiership. He is one of the most consistent goalkeepers that the Premiership has ever seen, having spent the past thirteen seasons in the top flight of English football. In his first season in England, Sorensen was part of the 1998/9 Sunderland team who won the old First Division, having attained twenty nine clean sheets in the process. When Sunderland were relegated and in financial crisis they sold Sorensen to Aston Villa for £2 million despite interest from both Man United and Arsenal. In his first three seasons with Villa Sorensen only missed four games but following an injury in preseason of the 2007/8 season he fell out of favour with manager Martin O'Neill and left the club on a free transfer, joining newly promoted Stoke soon after. He has had a great career at Stoke, consistently putting in great performances that have help the team become an established mid table Premiership team (coming 12th and 11th in their first and second seasons respectively). He also received a medal as a FA cup runner up in 2011 when Stoke lost 1-0 to Man City. In the last few years he and Begovic have competed for the number one spot but recently he has found himself as the cup keeper. With experience in the Europa league, the European Championships and the World Cup, he is definitely a keeper that any team looking to sure up their goal in the transfer market should go for.
