5th: Tottenham
For me, consistency is the only major reason that Tottenham may just miss out on a Champions League spot come the end of the season, and Bale, as always epitomises this. A fantastic performance against a rival top 4 club one week (take, for example, their 3-2 away win over United), and then the next week a stuttering one against opposition at the other end of the table (such as their 1-0 home loss to Wigan). In fairness, this was always going to be a tough season for Villas-Boas, taking over after what many saw as an unfair dismissal of Harry Redknapp. AVB does seem to have made his mark already though. He's opted to use Defoe instead of Adebayor, and his faith has been repaid with 14 goals in all competitions. The Portugese manager has also opted for a shift in transfer policy from Redknapp's, which means that instead of buying every player who tickles your fancy, and struggling to please a squad of 40 players, Tottenham have only bought a few key signings this summer, and trimmed some of the fat from the team. Unfortunately, I think Tottenham will just miss out if they carry on throwing away the 'soft' games, but there's still half a season left for them to prove me wrong.
