Premier League Transfers: 5 Defensive Players Bigger Clubs Should Target

4. Dejan Lovren (Southampton)

Southampton has been the story of the season so far and sit pretty in ninth place at present. There is certainly plenty of good quality attacking players in the team to ensure they are capable of scoring a goal or two, but the really secret to their success this season has been built on a defensive unit; A unit that has conceded just 15 goals all season, the joint best record in the league. The star behind that all-star unit has been Dejan Lovren, who has excelled with an average rating of 7.51 making him the 13th most consistent player in the league €“ and only Reid is in front of him in terms of performances by central defenders. The player only arrived in Southampton over the course of the summer, but his performances so far this season will have alerted bigger clubs. Prior to coming to England, Lovren was playing for Lyon in France where he also excelled €“ but the move has certainly allowed him to play a bit more first team football. The 24-year-old has also enjoyed playing international for Croatia, and has now won 22 caps for his country. It would be interesting to see if he would consider a move so soon after joining the club, especially since the Saints have excelled in the league this season.
