Ranking Every Liverpool Transfer Under Jürgen Klopp
6. Georginio Wijnaldum
A couple of months ago, I asked my 10 year old cousin if he knew who Paul Pogba was. Of course he told me, dabbing joyfully. Then I asked if he knew who Georgino Wijnaldum was. He had no idea.
If you were to name the most underrated midfielder in the Premier League, not just this season but in the last couple of seasons, Wijnaldum would be the most serious contender. He's intelligent, hard-working and versatile, he has a habit of scoring when it matters and, as he proved once more against Busquets and Arthur in the Champions League, his ball retention skills are second to none. As a midfielder, he's like Eminem. He rips it any style you want: assured in possession, dynamic in defense and dangerous going forward. Yet in discussions about PFA's Team of the Year, he wasn't even mentioned as a potential replacement for Pogba.
Even Liverpool supporters sometime seem to forget how much he contributed to this team's success. He was Liverpool's top playmaker in his first season with 11 assists. He scored massive goals against Man City, Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Roma, Cardiff and, obviously, Barcelona. And this year, he finally did away with his oft-criticized tendency to disappear away from home. No doubt when we'll look back years from now, we'll remember Wijnaldum as a standout of the Klopp era.
