Ranking Every Liverpool Transfer Under Jürgen Klopp
15. Dominic Solanke
Dom may be the only clear-cut flop of Liverpool's transfer business under Klopp. Viewers of the 2017 U-20 World Cup could see in Solanke a strong, elegant player, who often led the line as a target forward. The Benteke style, as experience proved, doesn't suit Liverpool though, and so it was crucial that Solanke also seemed able to play in behind the striker as a creative n°10, showcasing his abilities to dribble, turn himself on goal or link-up with his teammates. He brought home a winner's medal, the Player of the Tournament Award and a Liverpool deal.
He did look promising in his first couple of games. But come the end of the season, when the only positive thing you can say about a player who's received so much game time is that he has potential, it may be time to reconsider. Solanke had chance after chance to prove himself, but never delivered. By the end of the season, he registered one last-day goal and two assists. Nothing in comparison to his many failed chances (Burnley, Everton, Leicester in the EFL Cup).
Divock Origi just came out of a season where he had scored 11 and assisted three. Solanke had a better pre-season, but was it really worth taking a gamble on him, meanwhile sending Origi, a very decent back-up, who knew the team and the playing system, on loan at Wolfsburg, a move from which his confidence never recovered ? At the end of the day, the best thing Solanke brought to Liverpool is the £19M from his Bournemouth sell.
