Ranking Liverpool's 10 Worst Players Of The Season So Far

3. Martin Skrtel

Andres Kudacki/AP Although the likes of Dejan Lovren and Simon Mignolet have deservedly received bucket-loads of criticism this season- more on them later, unsurprisingly- Skrtel has also been terrible in 2014/15. He seems to be the only defender who Rodgers continues to pick for every game, and it's surely no coincidence that their defending is never any good. The Slovakia international had a decent time of things last season, but his unlikely goalscoring exploits masked some pretty poor defending at times. So far this season, his scoring has stopped, Liverpool aren't playing as well in attack and suddenly Skrtel is being exposed for the erratic centre-back that he is. Too often he is overly physical- his shirt-tugging is a joke, quite frankly- his positional sense is not good enough and there is absolutely no calm at the back whenever he is playing. The 30-year-old has been a decent servant to the Reds over a good number of years, but he is only ever as good as the defence he is playing in. He always impressed alongside the likes of Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher, but as soon as he is put alongside mediocre defenders, he is shown up greatly. He should be dropped, and it would be no surprise to see an upturn in Liverpool's fortunes if Rodgers did just that.
