7) Luuk De Jong

After spurning the club in the summer of 2012 to join Borussia Monchengladbach, De Jong joined the club for the second half of the 2013-14 season on loan. A baptism of fire was in store for the 6ft 2in forward, with his debut for the club coming against Sunderland, joining the game at half-time when already 2-0 down. After two unproductive seasons in Germany, it was hoped that the former long-term target would add an extra bit of firepower to take the burden off Loic Remy. Despite playing 12 times though, the former FC Twente man did not come up with a single goal - looking sluggish, unable to cope with the physicality of Premier League defenders and, most perhaps most concerning of all, unable to hit the target with poor control seeing a number of chances go begging. Newcastle did not seek to make the loan move permanent and De Jong instead moved to PSV Eindhoven last summer where he has rediscovered his goalscoring touch. Looking back, Mike Ashley might want to thank Monchengladbach for saving him £12 million in 2012 based on the forward's performances while on loan...
