Ranking All NUFC Premier League Goalkeepers - Worst To Best

9. Tommy Wright - 3 Appearances - 1999

For anyone who hasn't purged out the memory of the 'Monsoon Derby' from the 1999/00 season you will remember Tommy Wright. Signed on loan as a stop-gap by then Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit to cover for injuries to Shay Given and Steve Harper, the veteran shot-stopper was thrust into the limelight for the Tyne-Wear showdown with arch rivals Sunderland. It proved to be the nadir of his second spell on Tyneside thanks to a goal that has earned it's place in the history of both clubs. Although I was in my early teens at the time the image of Kevin Phillips' glorious lob through the torrential downpour, over Wrights futile outstretched glove and into the bottom corner is still fresh in the mind. Naturally he bore the brunt of my fury in the aftermath of the devastating defeat, my ignorance at his initial block to deny Phillips only registering when viewing the clip in later years. He played twice more that season, conceding six goals in the losses to Manchester United and Chelsea, before returning to parent club Manchester City.
