The news staggered many in the footballing world; Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson labelled it as "crazy" whilst Saints legend Matt Le Tissier accused Chairman Nicola Cortese of turning the club "into a laughing stock". Having been promoted to the Premier League after a seven year absence only this season, Southampton initially found life difficult in the top flight, and their transition to the highest tier of English football wasn't made easy when they were handed Manchester United in their first home game, which they lost 3-2. The Saints only won one Premier League game in their first month in the league and picked up just three wins going through to December. Nigel Adkins found his side in the relegation zone by January but guided the team to safety with an impressive 1-1 draw against Arsenal, and followed that up with a win against Aston Villa and a sensational draw away to Chelsea after fighting back from 2-0 behind.
