Southampton Transfers: 10 Players To Buy This Summer

9. Kasper Schmeichel

So-called "Holy Goalie" Artur Boruc somewhat called into question his religious credentials when chucking a bottle at the crowd, but has otherwise established himself as Saints number 1 during their time back in the Premier League. In that time, Boruc has undoubtedly made a number of crucial saves but equally has made various ridiculous blunders, not least trying to dribble the ball out of the box against Arsenal. With deputy Paulo Gazzaniga failing to convince when having to substitute for the Polish international, it would be sensible for Saints to be looking for a new keeper, one that is more solid, consistent and reliable than Boruc. Kasper Schmeichel struggled for a while to emerge from the shadow of his famous father, the best keeper of the Premier League era, with short spells at Cardiff, Coventry, Notts County and Leeds. At promotion chasing Leicester, though, Schmeichel has established himself as consistently the best keeper outside the top flight and impressed for his national team recently against England. With Leicester likely to go up this year, Schmeichel will feature in the Premier League next year one way or another, but his quality has already attracted interest from bigger clubs. A rumoured move to his father's old stomping ground at Old Trafford is unlikely, De Gea is still a decent option there, but Saints would provide the step up he deserves.
