While Graziano Pelle has been a goal machine for Southampton since arriving from Feyenoord in the summer, Southampton are severely lacking in other goalscoring options. Jay Rodriguez is still injured (and targeted by Tottenham), Emmanuel Mayuka has never impressed in his time at St. Mary's (and is about to leave for the African Nations Cup with Zambia), so a striker is likely to be the club's main January transfer priority. Saints scouts have been seen monitoring Blackburn Rovers forward Jordan Rhodes, suggesting that the club may see him as the perfect addition to their forward line. The English born Scottish international became the most expensive player outside the top flight when he signed for Blackburn for £8 million in the summer of 2012. Since then, Rhodes' stock has only risen with an enormously impressive 61 goals in 111 games for Rovers. Rhodes has never played in the Premiership, which may give pause for thought to a club considering paying his £12 million asking price. However, he stepped up instantly and comfortably from League 1 to the Championship and there is nothing to suggest that he would not be able to follow in the path of popular former Saint Rickie Lambert in doing the same at another level.
