Another option if Koeman is looking further to build on his midfield's defensive capabilities might be former Manchester City man Garcia. The former Real Madrid midfielder and Spanish international only left City in the summer, but, like Krychowiak, is already being linked with a move away from his new club. Signed by Andre Villas-Boas' Zenit St. Petersburg for £13 million just four months ago, Garcia is reported to be unsettled at the Russian club, especially after their elimination from the Champions League. Zenit, for their part, will need to cut costs with only a less lucrative Europa League campaign to look forward to. Amidst interest from clubs in Spain, Southampton have emerged as one of the favourites in the race for Garcia's signature. Capable of playing in central defence as well as midfield, Garcia's versatility would be useful to a club with a squad as thin as Saints, whose defence looks notably weaker when Florin Gardos has to be included in place of Alderweireld. Zenit, however, are unlikely to settle for less than the £13 million that they paid for the 27 year old, which could deter Southampton and other potential buyers who may view Garcia as a player who has perhaps passed his peak.
