Southampton vs Fulham: 5 Key Battles That Will Decide The Game

4. Dimitar Berbatov vs Dejan Lovren

Berbatov has really struggled in front of goal so far this season, converting just one in his seven appearances so far this season. More worryingly, is that he has had only 38% of his shots on target, with 5 shots being off the mark. This is worrying dip in form for a striker who last season saw 57% of his shots on target in a season that saw him lead his team in scoring by a considerable margins, chalking up 15 goals for the campaign. Up against the 32 year old veteran, the season could not be looking any more different for perhaps the signing of the season so far: Dejan Lovren. Lovren has helped transformed the Saints defence, plugging the hole in the leaky defence of last season. He is making vital contributions at both ends of the pitch, winning 73% of battles in the air and an 80% successful tackle completion record, as well as a winner against Liverpool (and possibly a second goal in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United). Last time these two sides faced up at St Mary's, it was his current partner at the back, Jose Fonte, that got both goals in a 2-2 draw. Lovren will be looking to emulate that on Saturday. Berbatov has goals in him, but if Lovren performs to the high level Saints fans has been accustomed to, he should be able to keep the former United striker quiet.
