Southampton vs Fulham - 5 Reasons Why Saints Will Continue Wonder Run
2. Ambition
The moment the Liebherr consortium came in, we've made it clear that we want Champions League football. At every level we progress, we maintain our vision remains the same. Last season, when Saints were widely tipped to get into the Europa League via the fair play system, Pochettino dismissed it, saying we want to qualify through our league performance. However, a few weeks ago, Pochettino has said he has little interest in the Europa League altogether and wants to bypass it and go straight to the Champions League. This sentiment has been echoed by players like Boruc, Wanyama and Lovren. It is this ruthless and driven ambition from Cortese that has installed this belief that we can achieve Champions League football within the next couple of seasons. It is this relentless drive that will ensure that this run of form will continue. Southampton are now in a position where failure is unacceptable, whether it be against Hull or Chelsea. Is this arrogance? Maybe, but it'll ensure this form continues, if not for any other reason, than fear of failure. It was this ambition that saw Nigel Adkins, sadly, fall by the wayside and if we don't accomplish a top 4 finish this season, Pochettino may encounter a similar fate. That may be the real reason he doesn't want to enter the Europa League: he may be out of a job!
