Spurs Best Overseas XI Of The Premier League Era

9. Centre Back: Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen is arguably the most accomplished outfield player currently at White Hart Lane. The Belgian international arrived from Ajax in the Netherlands in 2012 and quickly established himself both in Spurs' first team and as one of the best defenders in the Premier League - indeed, he was named in the 2012€“13 PFA Team of the Year. A classy defender, Vertonghen likes to have the ball at his feet and drive in to space to start Spurs' attacks from the back. He has played 59 times in the Premier League for Spurs - all from the start - and scored four league goals. He has played on an additional 26 occasions in other competitions. The number of great overseas centre backs at Spurs in the Premier League era has been pretty small but, even if it hadn't, Jan Vertonghen is such a good player that he'd probably have made this team regardless of his competition.
