Spurs: Ray Wilkins Believes Lilywhites Are Title Contenders
Ray Wilkins has echoed the recent sentiments of Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen by claiming that the White Hart Lane outfit can finally be considered title contenders. Spurs haven't won England's top domestic honour since the 1960-61 season and have struggled to make the top four in recent seasons, missing out on Champions League qualification for the last two campaigns. The North Londoners splashed the cash over the summer, bringing in players like Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela and have started the season well, sitting in fifth position in the Premier League - three points behind leaders and arch-rivals Arsenal. As a result, ex-Chelsea midfielder Wilkins thinks the Stamford Bridge outfit, as well as the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, face a stiff challenge from Andre Villas-Boas' outfit. He had this to say to talkSPORT:
"I don't think you can rule out Tottenham this year. "They had a little blip against West Ham but got a very good result at the weekend when they beat Aston Villa. "Man City looked extremely good away from home at West Ham, which is never an easy place to go to. Now they've got their away from on track, they're going to be up there, and Chelsea will be there or thereabouts."It will be very pleasing for Spurs to hear so many big names talking up their chances but, of course, believing the hype and actually performing what so many are expecting of them are entirely different prospects.
