Let's face it, Spurs have been looking for someone to fill the Luka Modric-shaped hole in their midfield ever since the departure of the Croatian maestro six years ago.

The problem is that deep-lying play-makers with the ability to unlock a bus-parking defence with a single through ball are incredibly hard to come by. Even Barcelona have struggled to replace the vision of Xavi since his move to Qatar.

Real Madrid, the jammy buggers, have three of them, one of whom - poor little Mateo Kovacic - can hardly get a game amid competition from the aforementioned Modric (also his international teammate) and Toni Kroos.

After snatching Gareth Bale from North London in 2013, the very least they could do is let Spurs have him for a cut price of, say, £40m. That seems fair for all parties.
