4. Roberto Soldado
Spurs are preparing a club-transfer-record-breaking bid for the Valencia striker, according to a report in the
Daily Mail last month. The Lilywhites came close to signing Soldado last summer and now they want a second bite of the cherry with club chairman Daniel Levy willing to sanction a £20 million move for the 28-year-old, which would cast the £16.75 million paid to Dinamo Zagreb for Luka Modric in 2008 well and truly into the shade. The former Real Madrid man, who began his career at the Bernabeu as a youth team player before breaking into the senior side and spending three years with the Spanish giants, has established himself as one of the more prolific goalscorers in La Liga and last season finished as the fifth-highest goalscorer in Spain, falling only behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and Alvaro Negredo. And manager Andre Villas-Boas hopes the capturing of the striker will help persuade Gareth Bale to stay at the club and help his side push forward for a top 4 spot next season.
