Stoke 1-0 Newcastle - Player Ratings

Defenders...

Paul Dummett - 5

The Welsh defender had a bit of a busy night faced against Xherdan Shaqiri and while the tricky winger skipped past him on several occasions, Dummett produced a few well-timed tackles as well as a vital header to defend a dangerous ball into the Magpies' box in the first half. Unfortunately for Dummett and Newcastle, Shaqiri skipped further into the field of play to get the all-important winning goal.

Daryl Janmaat - 5

The Dutch full back must have been expecting a busy night as Arnautovic looked bright in the early stages of the game. However, in a game which lacked any real spark, Janmaat's defensive duties were never really pushed to their limits. Normally an attacking threat in the opposition's half, Janmaat - like his team-mates - offered very little going forward.

Jamaal Lascelles - 5

Still a novice in the Premier League, the former Nottingham Forest man didn't have much to do in what was a quiet game for both sets of strikers until the goal.

Steven Taylor - 5

Taylor tried to play the ball out from the back at every opportunity, often running into the opposition half. Had control for the majority, but as with all the defence, he appeared to panic after the goal had gone in.
