The £325,000 initial fee for Phillips is one of the all-time great bargains as he went on to score 113 goals in 208 appearances for the Black Cats, including a sensational 30 goals in his debut Premier League season which is still a record for a newbie to this day. He remains the only Englishman ever to win the European Golden Boot, and if we're stripping his entire career down to the cheesy basics, he put a smile of every single face in the Stadium of Light on matchdays. Phillips scored close-range tap-ins, long-range screamers, mid-range curlers, outrageous volleys, cheeky penalties, even the occasional glancing header. He had it all, and more. Quinn goes down as the club's greatest legend, but Phillips must surely go down as one of the club's greatest goalscorers.
