Sunderland's New Manager: 5 Mad Moments From Paolo Di Canio

2. Substitute Me Now!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKHvvPClH-8 In February 2000, Harry Redknapp's West Ham United played out one of the most thrilling Premier League games in history with Bradford, and of course Paolo Di Canio was at the centre of everything. The Hammers were 4-2 down with 25 minutes left thanks to goals from Dean Windass, Peter Beagrie and a brace from Jamie Lawrence. However, Redknapp's side battled their way back into the game thanks to a penalty from Di Canio and an equaliser from Joe Cole. A certain Frank Lampard would wrap up proceedings when he rifled in a sensational winner with minutes left. Yet that wasn't the most sensational moment from the game, oh no. After being denied three penalty claims (two of which were stone wallers, but we will leave it to your discretion to decide which) Di Canio collapsed to the ground near the centre circle and demanded Redknapp substitute him out of protest. When West Ham finally did win a penalty kick on the fourth time of asking, there wasn't going to be any question as to who would take it. Lampard had confidently placed the ball on the spot and was preparing to take the crucial spot kick, which was a huge mistake. Di Canio confronted his teammate, gave him his famous death stare and sent him scuttling away behind three Bradford players as the Italian stepped up to the mark and thundered his effort home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NovS1hohmTw
