Sunderland's Worst XI Of The 21st Century

2. Paul McShane

Some defenders are so consistently competent, they have the ability to calm a stadium of nervous fans with their mere presence - men like Gary Neville and Nemanja Vidic. Paul McShane was often the very opposite. It seems ludicrous now, but McShane was actually brought in by Roy Keane to strengthen the squad for their first season back in the top flight. Signed from West Brom for £1,500,000, the Irish international gave fans kittens with his ineffective defensive work, too often guilty of shanking a clearance straight to the opposition. Where Is He Now: Paul has just been released by Hull, unable to help sufficiently shore up their backline in last season's relegation dogfight. At least he helped keep Sunderland up, however indirectly.
