Sylvain Marveaux Could Get Another Chance At Newcastle - With Guingamp Unable To Match Wages

Sylvain Marveaux could be given one final opportunity to resurrect his Newcastle United career after Guingamp confirmed they would be unable to sign him permanently this summer. The midfielder enjoyed a decent season on loan in France, scoring three times and providing six assists in 33 appearances, but Guingamp boss Jocelyn Gourvennec has admitted the club cannot afford to pay his wages on a permanent basis. That brings about the possibility of Marveaux being finally given an extensive run in the Magpies first team next term - if Steve McClaren, who is expected to be named as the club's manager imminently, fancies him according to The Chronicle.

Since arriving at the Magpies from Rennes in 2011, Marveaux has made 57 appearances for Newcastle - including just 13 starts in the Premier League - and has netted twice. Injuries have affected his progress, while Alan Pardew (and John Carver) did not seem keen on the 29-year-old, rarely giving him a decent run in the team or playing Marveaux out of position. He was then placed in the reserves alongside Hatem Ben Arfa last summer before being sent out on loan to France. Gourvennec may have been "happy" with the midfielder's contributions on the field in 2014-15 for Guingamp, but he will be unable to keep Marveaux next term. When asked about the situation of his loanees, Gourvennec responded:

"They (including Marveaux) have to return to their clubs."

With a year left on his contract, this summer is make or break on Tyneside for Marveaux. If McClaren arrives and decides he doesn't like the look of the creative midfielder then he may never play another competitive game for the Magpies. However, should he knuckle down and impress this summer then a player who described himself as being "blacklisted" by Newcastle to former teammate Yohan Cabaye last month and revealed he "misses" the Magpies could yet have a future on Tyneside.
