10 Most Ridiculously Over-Priced Flops In Premier League History
6. Juan Sebastian Veron - Manchester United (£28.1m) & Chelsea (£15m)
Juan Sebastian Veron did not enjoy life on the pitch in England. Manchester United brought him in for £28.1 million back in 2001, and much was expected of the Argentinian playmaker, who was ready to set the Premier League alight with his creative genius. He was extremely talented, as he had shown at Parma and Lazio previously, but Veron failed to make his mark on United enough to justify his price tag. Veron had his moments and flashes of brilliance, but the fee proved in the end to be far too much for him. Some blame should fall on United though, who didn't use the playmaker correctly as they stuck with their rigid 4-4-2 set up, instead of giving Veron license to roam. Sir Alex Ferguson was happy to take a £13 million hit on Veron a few years later, when United agreed to sell the midfielder to Chelsea. He was part of Chelsea's 'Russian Revolution' after Roman Abramovich took over the Blues, but La Brujita did not shine at Stamford Bridge either. He eventually carted off out of England in 2006, to return to his homeland with boyhood club Estudiantes. He did get back to his best in Argentina, but moving about in England for a combined total of £43 million makes him a dead cert for the over-priced flop list.
