10 Most Ridiculously Over-Priced Flops In Premier League History

7. Alberto Aquilani - Liverpool (£20m)

It's not quite been Liverpool's worst piece of transfer business, but the signing of Alberto Aquilani from Roma for £20 million ranks right up there - and there's been some stinkers. It was 2009 and the Reds had just enjoyed their best league campaign for years, annihilating Manchester United at Old Trafford and running them extremely close in the title race. So the time had come to make the necessary improvements to topple their stern rivals. However, Liverpool had just lost Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, so that made the Italian's job on Merseyside even bigger. Unfortunately for Aquilani, he failed miserably to make his presence known at Anfield. Aquilani was hampered by injury in his early days and he made just 26 appearances in his first season, only to be loaned out to Juventus at the start of the next campaign. Big things were hoped of the Italian who promised much in his days at Roma, but the move was just not the right one for him when he came to Anfield. He ended up making just two more appearances for the Reds before returning to Italy for good. Aquilani now plays for Fiorentina in Serie A.
