10 Most Ridiculously Over-Priced Flops In Premier League History
4. Darren Bent - Aston Villa (£24m)
Aston Villa smashed through their transfer record in January 2011 when they signed Darren Bent from Sunderland for £24 million - only to see him completely lose all momentum he had gained in his career before moving to the Midlands club. An initial £18 million fee which rose to the £24 million mark was a little excessive at the time, even though Bent was an England international and a proven Premier League goalscorer. However, Villa are still paying for adding Bent to their front line, with his excessive wages being the reason that current manager Paul Lambert doesn't like playing him. Word is that he's set to be drafted back into the first team next season, despite still pocketing £65,000 a week from the Premier League strugglers. It's an odd situation considering Bent is a player with over 100 goals to his name in the Premier League, but a manager does what a manager wants. Bent was even made to train away from the first team with the likes of Alan Hutton, with the pair reportedly being bad for squad harmony. It's not really the best way to maximise the potential of your club record signing.
