Manchester City could've saved the millions they splurged in finding a suitable centre-back had they just retained Jerome Boateng.

After promising in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, the Skyblues signed Boateng in 2010 but the German star lasted just a single season, making only 16 appearances in the Premier League.

He was unhappy at being shunted out on the right side of the defense and also at the lack of first-team opportunities. This prompted him to join Bayern Munich in 2011 where he has since earned the reputation of one of the centre-backs in the world.

Boateng improved year on year and now in his ninth season in the German top-flight, finds himself with 311 caps and an incredible 15 trophies, including one Champions League.

He had also played an influential part in Germany's World Cup triumph in 2014.
