By far and away the best player in this team and the only one no longer active on the pitch, David Beckham is arguably the most famous footballer of all time.

Signed from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2003, during the Galaticos era, Beckham's transfer fee means he just makes this XI ahead of England's all time top scorer, Wayne Rooney.

What more about him is there to say? Beckham was simply a world-class winger, brilliant from set-pieces and mesmerising to watch. While his big money move to Los Blancos yielded few trophies, he finished his career with league titles in four different countries and plenty of other silverware in his cabinet.

Part of the golden generation of England players, Beckham represented his country over a hundred times and spent six years as captain, although trophies eluded the Three Lions. He had his fair share of abuse following a red card in the 1998 World Cup, but won back the nation's hearts with a sensational free-kick against Greece in the qualifiers a few years later.

Someone whose fame transcended the sport, is he the best player England have ever had? Quite possibly.
