The Most Expensive World Footballer XI Of All Time

7. Left Back: Benjamin Mendy - £52 Million

Rounding off the all Premier League back line is Manchester City left back Benjamin Mendy. The youngster impressed during his time with Marseille and Monaco in Ligue 1, earning himself a move to the Premier League for £52 million. This made him the most expensive defender in history, just ten days after new teammate Kyle Walker broke the record.

Unfortunately for Mendy, his City career hasn't quite taken off the same way Walker's has, with the Frenchman's playing opportunities being incredibly limited over the last two years. Thanks to an unfortunate ACL injury at the start of the 2017-18 season, Mendy managed just five Premier League appearances. While this was enough to earn him a winners medal, this was not even close to what the defender wanted to play.

Further injury at the start of last season limited the World Cup winner to just ten appearances, with Oleksandr Zinchenko taking his place for the majority of the season.

Such is the harsh reality of football, this has seemingly solidified Zinchenko as Pep Guardiola's first choice left back, with the responsibility now on Mendy's shoulders to earn that place back.
