Tottenham 1-1 Espanyol: 5 Key Things We Learned

5. Left Back Is A Weak Area For Spurs

FabioCoentrao With Danny Rose at left back for this match (and looking very lightweight and receiving an injury that forced him off) and Benoit Assou-Ekotto nowhere to be seen, there is no doubting that Spurs are weak in the left back spot. Having already sold Steven Caulker, seen Jan Vertonghen sidelined and with Younes Kaboul just returning from serious injury, Spurs are already looking vulnerable at centre back, so it would be less than ideal if they also opened their Premier League campaign with the left back area also looking weak. The Lilywhites have been strongly linked with a move for Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao all summer, regardless of the potential Gareth Bale deal, and signing the Portuguese international attacking full back would be the perfect remedy to an obvious problem, since he is also defensively sound. Rose looked decent going forward but was knocked off the ball too easily yesterday and generally looked uneasy defensively and, with Assou-Ekotto strongly tipped to leave, a new left back must be Tottenham's next priority (assuming Etienne Capoue's arrival is confirmed to provide some centre back cover).
